Crows v Demons preview
Don’t poke the bear. Or in this case the Demon.
After a series of off-field controversies – which continues – plus three straight defeats, Melbourne showed why they are the defending premiers last Thursday against Brisbane thumping the Lions by 64 points without injured captain Max Gawn (ankle).
They now leave the footy furnace of Melbourne for the first time in six weeks to play an Adelaide Crows’ side who haven’t played at home either since early June.
Last week the Crows cantered to a 115-58 win over the last-placed Kangaroos at Hobart’s Blundstone Arena taking Adelaide to five wins and nine losses for the year. Still an outside chance of playing finals, the ‘pride of South Australia’ has a mountain to climb in the next four weeks playing Melbourne (home), Hawthorn (away), Collingwood (home) and Sydney (away).
Adelaide’s Riley Thilthorpe (knee) is back while very little change is expected for Melbourne before the first bounce. Forwards Ned McHenry (knee) and Shane McAdam (ankle) will both miss the match though.
Clayton Oliver starred in last week’s win racking up 35 disposals for the Dees to follow his 43 against Collingwood the previous week. He is the leading disposal getter in the AFL averaging 34.5.
This week the star midfielder signed an astonishing seven-year contract extension with the reigning premiers in a big boost for the future.
