Australia’s Mitchell Starc has picked up a $2m payday but his IPL record has been smashed as Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant secured an extraordinary $4.92m deal – the richest in IPL auction history.
Starc was the fourth marquee player up for bidding at the IPL auction in Jeddah, but unlike his record 24.25 crore price last year he only sold for 11.75 crore ($2.13m) on Sunday night to the Delhi Capitals.
It was not the greatest result for the Australian fast bowler who pocketed $4.43m last year when he helped the Kolkata Knight Riders win the IPL title.
But Starc remains one of the highest earners in world cricket with his left arm pace and lower order batting highly valued at the IPL auction.
His Test pace ally Josh Hazlewood also banked a sizable payday - and the highest of the Australians - landing a $2.29m contract with Royal Challengers Bengaluru, while batting firecracker Jake Fraser-McGurk pocketed $1.64m after being picked up to become Starc's teammate at the Capitals.
Marcus Stoinis was another huge winner, earning $2m to play for Ponting’s Punjab Kings.
On a day where 72 players earned instant paydays, however, it was not good news for Australian veteran David Warner, who failed to sell at auction.
It was an extraordinary night as Ponting, coach of the Kings, waged a stunning battle with the Delhi Capitals to secure the services of Indian opening batter Shreyas Iyer.
Iyer had led the Knight Riders to last year’s title, scoring 370 runs at 46.25 with a strike rate of 158.79 to signify his enormous value at the top of the order.
Eventually the hammer fell in Ponting’s favour with Iyer sold for an astonishing 26.25 crore ($4.87m).
At the time it was a stunning record, that was until Pant went under the hammer at the end of the first round of six marquee players.
After a series of bids the feisty keeper sold for $4.92m, or 27 crore, to the Lucknow Super Giants.
Earlier, Ponting had also splurged $3.28m for Arshdeep Singh while England wicketkeeper batter Jos Buttler sold for $2.87m to Gujarat Titans, who also secured Kagiso Rabada for $1.96m.
At least 38 players from Australia are registered for the IPL auction which will last two days.
Veteran all-rounder Glenn Maxwell also went to Punjab Kings, for $765,000, while Mitchell Marsh went to Lucknow Super Giants for $620,000. Leg-spinner Adam Zampa was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for $436,000.
