Luke Gibbs continues recovery after freak injury

A freak injury, which left him with a dislodged Adam’s apple and snapped neck ligament, has forced a local cricketer to call time on his career.

A beloved local cricketer will never play again after a freak accident earlier this month.

Reservoir Mayston’s Luke Gibbs was left with a dislodged Adam’s apple and snapped neck ligament after a ball hit him in the throat during a North West Metropolitan Cricket Association game on January 7.

The 24-year-old attempted to bat on but was eventually taken from the field and taken to hospital.

Subsequent tests and treatment revealed a slight knock in the area could prove deadly if he continued to play sport.

Reservoir Mayston president Peter Pfeiffer said the club was continuing to rally around the popular figure.

“He was trying to stick it out the tough little fella,” he said.

“He’s gone to play a ball forward, then it’s hit his arm and got up into his throat. There’s about a one in a million chance of it happening again, you probably couldn’t do it if you tried.

“If his Adam’s apple moved another couple of centimetres, we could have had fatality on our hands.

“Since then he’s been in really good spirits and keeps updating everyone on his progress. At such a young age to be told you’re not going to play sport again would be difficult to take.”

Gibbs, a self-employed bricklayer, will need to spend time away from work as he continues his recovery.

But his positive energy is one of his biggest traits according to Pfeiffer.

“He’s a very popular figure at the club, his family is heavily involved at the Redbacks,” he said.

“A lot of his cricket ability comes from being a gun fielder. I don’t think I’ve ever heard him say a bad word out in the field. He’s just charismatic and keeps us older blokes on our toes.

“Away from cricket, he loves his NBA and is a Collingwood member.”

Pfeiffer has started a fundraiser to support Gibbs in the coming weeks and months as he continues his recovery from a freak injury.
