Why Xabi Alonso will choose Liverpool over Bayern Munich for next management job

A former Liverpool player has declared he’d be ‘amazed’ if Xabi Alonso turned down an offer to manage the club after the exit of Jurgen Klopp.

Danny Murphy has declared he’d be ‘amazed’ if Xabi Alonso turned down an offer to manage the club.

And the talkSPORT pundit has also outlined why Jurgen Klopp will not take up the soon-to-be-vacant Bayern Munich position this summer.

Klopp announced his shock decision to stand down at Anfield last month, with the German to depart at the end of the season.

Bayer Leverkusen boss Alonso has emerged as a favourite to replace him having enjoyed five years in Merseyside between 2004-2009 where he won the Champions League and FA Cup.

But he is also understood to be on Bayern’s radar with Thomas Tuchel to move on from the Allianz Arena at the conclusion of the campaign.

It was in Bavaria where Alonso finished his career after three trophy-laden seasons where he scooped three Bundesliga titles and the German Cup.

However Murphy believes that it is Liverpool where the Spaniard will end up should he seek a new challenge away from the BayArena.

Speaking on White and Jordan about Alonso’s options, Murphy said: “I don’t see anybody refusing the opportunity to go to Liverpool when you are at a lesser club, because it might not come around again.

“The only thing I can think of that would take him to Munich ahead of Liverpool would be some sort of family decision - kids being settled - but who knows?

“My gut instinct is his relationship with the Liverpool supporters while he was there as a player which was so high, it will get him over the line.

“I can’t see him refusing it, but maybe it’s just my bias. I’m trying to put myself in his shoes, but he didn’t grow up being a Liverpool fan, did he?

“The reality is, I’d be amazed if he got offered the job to manage Liverpool and turned it down, I’d be amazed.”

And Murphy has also revealed he would be shocked if Klopp moves to Munich having cited fatigue as his reason to depart Liverpool.

Commenting on whether Klopp could be tempted by the Bayern job, Murphy remarked: “I’d be amazed.

“He’s given up this wonderful relationship he’s got with the Liverpool supporters and the affinity he’s got with the football club and the people.

“To then start working again six weeks later? No chance.

“He seems [to be] a man of his word, it seems a genuine reason for him [to leave], I can’t think of an ulterior motive that’s behind it for him to then say, ‘I’m going to be working somewhere else.‘”

Klopp’s agent Marc Kosicke recently told Sky Germany that the former Borussia Dortmund boss will be taking a year out from football.

Denying any chance of a Bayern link-up, he stated: “Jurgen Klopp will not coach any club or national team for a year after this current season. That remains unchanged.”
