Apprentice jockey Alana Livesey is targeting late May for a return to the saddle as she recovers from a broken hand sustained in a race fall at Port Lincoln earlier this month.
The talented hoop, who has notched 34 wins this season, was dislodged from her mount Seven Shots in the opening race at Port Lincoln on March 16, when the gelding knuckled at the 400m before continuing riderless.
Livesey underwent surgery on a broken hand last week after sustaining a metacarpal fracture in the fall, which will see her ruled out for the Adelaide Racing Carnival from April 26.
“It went really well, she’s progressing well,” manager Melissa Shield said.
“From time of operation, to back in the saddle, they were saying 6-8 weeks – hopefully.
“We are coming up to week three. We are looking to return just after the carnival.”

It’s a frustrating setback at an inopportune time for Livesey, with Morphettville hosting three consecutive weeks of Group 1 racing over April and May, featuring the Robert Sangster Stakes, Australasian Oaks, South Australian Derby and The Goodwood, all worth $1 million.
Livesey notched a feature race win aboard Wild Imagination in last month’s Premier’s Plate.
