Former jockey Lewis German has received a 10-year disqualification for his part in a betting scandal.

German and fellow exiled jockey Michael Poy, who will learn his fate at the Victorian Racing Tribunal on March 31, engaged in conduct prejudicial to the image of racing in 2022.

German rode to lose on selected mounts from April 21 to August 31.

The tribunal heard a professional punter, Noah Brash, placed 89 lay bets totalling about $2.5m and profited $259,494 with 87 successful wagers on German rides.

German, 25, who never profited from the scheme, apologised for his actions.

“I am not here to tell a sad story. I am here to apologise to the racing community and to everyone who trusted in me. I feel like I let them down,” German told the tribunal.

“I have not received any money. I believed there was going to be money. I was told that I would be paid at the start but I was probably gullible at the time.”

The tribunal previously heard Poy communicated with Brash on bets to place and rode to advantage the wagers.
