Peter Snowden has his eye on the Percy Sykes Stakes rather than the Golden Slipper for his filly Memo after her Magic Night win

Peter Snowden says the Golden Slipper may be a “bridge too far” for his gutsy filly Memo despite her barnstorming Magic Night Stakes win, but he is eyeing another autumn target.

The maestro Peter Snowden has all but closed the door on a Golden Slipper start for Memo despite her outstanding win at Rosehill Gardens on Saturday.

Memo was near the rear of the field and looked out of contention at the top of the straight but unleashing a stunning sprint wide out to win the Group 3 $250,000 Magic Night Stakes (1200m).

This earns the filly automatic entry into the $5m Golden Slipper but Snowden said it was most unlikely he will ask the filly to back-up next Saturday.

“I don’t think so,” said Snowden, who has trained two Golden Slipper winners with Capitalist (2016) and Sepoy (2011).

“It’s too early to make a call yet, I’ve got to talk to all the owners about it, but in my mind the Percy Sykes is the race for her.

“She’s had a long season, she’s been to every dance and to back up again after a week and a very hot day today probably might be one bridge too far for her.

“The old cliche, ‘never make a decision after a race’, but I think it might be a bridge too far.”

Memo ($9) has been placed in four of her first five starts including her second placing in the Magic Millions before finally breaking through in the Magic Night Stakes, finishing fast to run down Dream Side ($15) near the line to win by a neck with Alabama Magic ($26) 1½ lengths away third.

Strada Varenna ($3 favourite) led for a long way before fading late to finish fourth.

There was a nice touch of symmetry with Memo’s win as she is part-owned by form guru Gary Crispe, the founder of Racing And Sports which was the sponsor of the Magic Night Stakes.

Kerrin McEvoy secured the feature two-year-old double on Memo after scoring earlier with Skyhook in the Pago Pago Stakes.

“I wasn’t too happy when she missed the start and we were a long way further back than what we thought,” McEvoy said.

“But full credit to her, and Pete and his team. They’ve done a good job because it was just a run last time but she showed on Tuesday morning that she’d come on well and she did a good job there because we had to give them a start.

“I came here, sort of confident that she could bounce out of that Randwick run and that’s what she did. She showed a good turn of foot.”

Snowden has promising colt Quietly Arrogant in the Golden Slipper field and if he changes his mind to include Memo in next week’s big race, then she would be in line to become the seventh filly to complete the Magic Night-Golden Slipper double.

Kiamichi (2019) is the most recent winner of the double which was also achieved by Bint Marscay (1993), Bounding Away (1986), Dark Eclipse (1980), Century Miss (1979) and Toy Show (1975).

The Gerald Ryan and Sterling Alexiou stable, which prepared Skyhook to win the Pago Pago Stakes, narrowly missed the two-year-old feature race double when Dream Side was collared by Memo in the shadows of the post.

“A terrific effort,” said Josh Parr, rider of Dream Side.

“She is progressing nicely and is still on the way up.”
