Trainer John Sargent is confident Powers Of Opal will confirm herself as his latest top staying filly when she contests the Group 1 $750,000 Flight Stakes (1600m) at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Sargent has hopes of winning another VRC Oaks with Powers Of Opal, a race for which the gun daughter of Ocean Park is currently an $8 equal favourite before her maiden major assignment.

The Randwick mile will be short of her best but Sargent expects Powers Of Opal will be doing her best work late with Tommy Berry in the saddle.

“She is just a quality staying filly,” Sargent said. “She is a typical NZ staying type of filly and she should fit in nicely in those kind of races in the spring and the autumn.

“Very relaxed and athletic, she can hit the line and is bred to stay.”

Powers Of Opal is still a maiden but has shown plenty of promise in four starts to date.

She had the flashing light on last start when she hit the line with plenty to offer in Midway grade over 1400m and is a $11 chance in the Flight Stakes after the scratching of hot favourite Autumn Glow on Friday.

“She is in good form and if she runs a good race and gets some black type, that augurs well and then we can look at Melbourne,” Sargent said.

“I could have gone down to the Edward Manifold but you can’t go down and back and back down with a three-year-old filly, you just have to stay there.

“It is too far away from the other races so it just works out nice, you go over the road and she will hit the line strongly.”

Sargent also has the $18 Oaks contender Inevitable Truth.

The daughter of Fastnet Rock was doing her best work late in the Oaks Trial over 1800m last month with Sargent set to target another Melbourne feature next.

“Inevitable Truth will go down for the Ethereal Stakes and stay down there for the other staying races,” said Sargent, who last won the VRC Oaks with Kirramosa in 2013.
