Decades ago Kostya Tszyu moved from Russia to down under and soon after became an undisputed world champion and Australian boxing legend.

Fast forward to 2023, and Moroccan-born Mounir Fathi is looking to follow in Tszyu‘s footsteps, and fulfil his dreams of holding a world title in front of an Australian crowd.

And that dream is one step closer, having officially signed with Australia’s premier boxing promotion No Limit on Wednesday. The multi-year contract could see the Moroccan fight eight times and he could feature as soon as October on the undercard of Tim Tszyu‘s WBO interim world title defence against Brian Mendoza.

Fresh off signing his name on the dotted line at No Limit HQ with support from his manager Billy Dib, Fathi was ecstatic, saying he was “grateful for the opportunity”.

Given No Limit holds the “biggest and best shows” in the country, the Moroccan said “at this stage of my career it is really important to be around the right people”.

“You can have all the boxing skills in the world, but being in the right environment will help me reach my goals,” he said.

“I’m excited to get to work, No Limit will help me get good fights and being on television will only help me get my brand out there to the world and one day win a world title.”

Having held two world titles throughout his illustrious career, Dib knows exactly what it takes to reach the top of the sport, saying he is looking forward to working with No Limit as he continues to build Fathi’s rise to stardom.

The Moroccan made the move to Australia permanent last year, and already knows his way around the Australian boxing scene, having fought four times already in his new home country.

Most recently, he dominated tough New Zealander Jerome Pascua, earning a second round TKO on No Limit’s undercard for Issac Hardman who also picked up a win against Kazuki Kyohara.

And that was the litmus test for the Rose brothers.

Dib said there was interest right from the start, but after they finally saw his man in action the signing was a “no-brainer”.

“Look I’ve got all the faith in the world with this kid, he’s like a brother to me and I truly believe he will be world champion one day,” Dib said.

“All he needs is the right people around him, and No Limit is the best in Australia for a reason.”

Fathi isn’t the only star on his roster, with Dib’s brother Youssef picking himself up off the canvas to remain undefeated after his 20th professional win against Miles Zalewski.

With Fathi and Youssef making their way to the top, the hard work continues and Dib said “the future‘s looking bright”.

Fathi is already turning the heads of Australian boxing royalty with Jeff Fenech singing his praises.

“He could be anything. I know he’s in the same division as Nikita (Tszyu) but I’d be keeping them all away from him,” Fenech told this masthead after commentating his win over Pascua.

“The kid is amazing … he gets hit a tiny bit, but that’s because he’s so confident in his distance and countering.

“He’s already riding the punches. I haven’t been impressed by someone that much in a long time.”
