CODE Sports journalist Linda Pearce is in the running for one of Australia’s top sports journalism prizes for a series of powerful investigative stories and exceptional profile pieces.

Pearce is one of four finalists for the prestigious 2021 Harry Gordon Australian Sports Journalist of the Year.

Pearce, a member of CODE Sports’ stable of outstanding sports writers, was recognised by the judges for her special investigation into Australian gymnastics, plus a series of in-depth pieces on leading Australian athletes in swimming, basketball, tennis and athletics.

The Melbourne Press Club’s Gordon Award recognises excellence in sports journalism across all codes and regions of Australia.

The press club says the judges look for sports journalism that is “memorable and excellent”.

“They recognise the impact of a big breaking story or a game-changing revelation but they also give weight to consistent achievement of a high standard,” the award site says.

“Above all they will applaud journalists whose work has enriched the sports they cover and the experience of their readers, viewers or listeners.”

Pearce’s recognised articles were:

- Gymnastics special investigation Part I and Part II

- Ariarne Titmus news feature

- Ash Moloney/Cedric Dubler feature

- Josh Giddey feature

- Sam Stosur feature

The award honours the memory of Harry Gordon, one of the greatest war correspondents, sports writers and newspaper editors of his generation.

The winner will be announced at the Quills Awards in Melbourne on March 18.

The other finalists are Michael Warner of the Herald Sun, Jonathan Horn of the Guardian and Greg Baum of The Age.
