The WAFL Colts premiership race is heating up after West Perth produced an almighty performance to inflict Claremont’s second loss of the season.
Heading into round 19, the Tigers had only previously lost to East Perth during the U18 National Championships where they lost a significant chunk of their squad to state duties.
But with just a fortnight to go until finals, the third-placed Falcons have announced their finals ambitions with a 29-point win over Claremont.
The ambush was led by draft prospect Kayle Gerreyn, who tops our Champion Data rankings for the second consecutive week. Gerreyn finished with 23 disposals, 19 hitouts and three goals in a dominant display, underlining his reputation as the best tall in this year’s WA draft pool.
Gerreyn went head-to-head with fellow AFL national draft combine invitee Aiden Riddle in the ruck, the Claremont star was just as impressive with 11 disposals, 21 hitouts and 3.1.
Teammate Sam Swalding was also influential, kicking 3.2 from 20 touches and seven marks to finish second in the round 19 rankings. Eli Alexander also cracked the top 20 thanks to two goals and 16 disposals.
Perth pair Brodie McLean (20 disposals, eight tackles, one goal) and Mitchell Keene (21 touches, four marks, one goal) did their best to inspire the Demons in a three-point loss to Subiaco.
Bottom-ager Fred Rodriguez continued his impressive run of form with 28 disposals and seven tackles in South Fremantle’s victory over Peel Thunder. Meanwhile, Swan Districts star Luke Cotellessa led the way in the Black Ducks’ big win over East Fremantle, racking up 27 touches and four tackles.
